Women of the Civil War era helped out in their own way by providing water during battle or keeping up the homes until their husbands came back from war. However, some women defied their gender roles for the times and went out onto the battlefield, undercover as men. Female reenactors today emanate these cross-dressing women by reenacting on the battlefield as men.
