Whale Hunt
Sam Gledisheygg, 10, experiments with cutting whale blubber during a whale hunt, or grindadráp, in the village of Sy•rugøtu in the Faroe Islands. Though children do not participate in the hunt, they often practice cutting out pieces of leftover whale. Later, their families will teach them how to actually kill the whale by quickly severing the spinal cord, then how to efficiently cut it up for meat.

Alzheimer's
Lissa walks down the corridor of Madsjberg, the nursing home where she lives. Lissa has Alzheimer's, although it is not severe. She does suffer from memory loss but is functional and quite happy. Lissa's partner, Orla, also lives in Madsjberg, but they do not live in the same room together. Orla has mild senility and Lissa sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night disoriented, not knowing where she is or what time period she is in. They cannot live in the same room because of this, but they visit each other every so often. Lissa often forgets that she has had lunch, and will join Orla in his wing for a second lunch.

Forgetful
Two patients sit at the table in the common room after coffee in the afternoon at Madsjberg in Aarhus, Denmark. Both suffer from severe Alzheimer’s and often do not know where they are or what time period it is. One is pleasant and lighthearted, just seemingly lost, while the other is prone to outbursts and shouting matches with other patients. These are both typical behavior traits for individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s.

Long Beach
Beach-goers wash the sand off their bodies after a Sunday at the beach in Long Beach, New York. Temperatures in New York on this particular weekend reached into the high 90s, and many came out to the beach, which has notoriously rough and high waves, to attempt to cool off.

Sink or Swim
Jowan Qupty comes up for air in the diving well after practice with the MU swim team in the MU Aquatic Center. Qupty is not a member of MU's team, but is training with them to make the team for the Israeli Olympics. Qupty is the first ever Arab to place in the Israeli Championships. Qupty's political views are controversial at home, as he is the only Palestinian to represent on the Israeli team.

Mud On Your Face
Hickman student Cassie French laughs as her portrait is taken after the Epic Mud Run 5K on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Midway Travel Plaza. The race featured a course with over a dozen obstacles, from mud pits to Porta-Potties. It took place at the truck stop where Truck Stop Missouri, a new Travel Channel show, is being filmed.

South wide receiver Taylor Walcott of Marist High School celebrates in the end zone with South teammate quarterback Jacob Hollister after running a 66-yard touch down during the Les Schwab Bowl. Walcott received the most valuable player award on his team, the south team.

Naked Bike Ride
Nick Miner fixes his shorts as he prepared to be a "Never Nude," a la the television show "Arrested Development," before the Naked Bike Ride. Miner planned to wear the shorts for the time being, but stated they could be torn away if he decided to go naked.

Slaughter
Noah Arbuckle, 4, gasps as he lets go of a turkey's legs after his father, John Arbuckle, chops off the turkey's head at their farm in La Plata, Missouri. John is a farmer and a butcher and used the experience slaughtering the turkey to teach Noah about life and where food comes from.

The Tualatin Hills Synchro team practices at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center. The synchronized swimming program offers competitive training for all ages, or just-for-fun classes for those who want to learn the sport with no competitive pressure.

9/11
Matt Schofield was a member of the Missouri Task Force 1 group that went out to Manhattan after the World Trade Center fell to help clean up the destruction. On the anniversary of 9/11, Schofield reflects on the days he spent in New York. On the way out to Manhattan, Schofield got a phone call to notify him that his cousin had just had a baby. While on the phone, Schofield remembered his cousin saying to him, “I just want you and your team to be encouraged and to know that even in the midst of all the bad stuff that’s going on that God is till in charge and there is new life.” The conversation struck Schofield, who said, “You kind of felt like in the midst of all that storm that was around you, you had something to kind of anchor you, bring you back down.”
